New Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave in Santa Monica, Pasadena, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County and
NEW - City of Santa Monica Increases Minimum Wage
Effective July 1, 2016, the minimum wage for Santa Monica employees will increase to $10.50 per hour. The new ordinance also provides for an even higher minimum wage for Santa Monica hotel workers, which will be $13.25 on July 1, 2016 and $15.37 on July 1, 2017. This provision applies to all Santa Monica hotels and motels, no matter the size, and employees working in any capacity, including at on-site restaurants.
NEW - Santa Monica Paid Sick Leave Provisions
Effective January 1, 2017, employers will be required to provide even more paid sick time to employees who work within Santa Monica’s city limits.

NEW - City of Los Angeles Increases Minimum Wage
Effective July 1, 2016 the City of Los Angeles’ minimum wage will increase to $10.50 per hour for employers with more than 26 employees. Employees with 25 or fewer employees are required to pay a minimum wage of $10 per hour, which is the same rate as California’s state minimum wage. However, the City of Los Angeles does require annual increases to this wage.
NEW - City of Los Angeles Doubles Employees’ Sick Leave
Entitlement Effective July 1, 2016
The City of Los Angeles approved new regulation which will provide employees working in the City of Los Angeles with the ability to accrue and use up to forty-eight (48) hours of sick leave, twice the amount provided by state law. Enacted as an urgency matter, the new City of LA sick leave obligations become effective for employers on July 1, 2016, less than 30 days after being signed by Mayor Eric Garcetti. The Ordinance doubles the amount of sick leave for all employees, regardless of the size of the employer, and requires that employees be permitted to use up to 48 hours of accrued sick leave each year.
NEW - City of Pasadena Increases Minimum Wage
Effective July 1, 2016 the City of Pasadena minimum wage will increase to $10.50 per hour for employers with more than 26 employees. Employees with 25 or fewer employees are required to pay a minimum wage of $10.00 per hour, the same rate as CA’s state minimum wage. However, the City of Pasadena does require annual wage increases.
NEW - County of Los Angeles Increases Minimum Wage (unincorporated areas of LA)
Effective July 1, 2016 the County of Los Angeles minimum wage will increase to $10.50 per hour for employers with more than 26 employees. Employees with 25 or fewer employees are required to pay a minimum wage of $10.00 per hour which is the same rate as CA’s state minimum wage. However, LA County does require annual increases.
NEW - San Francisco Increases Minimum Wage
Effective July 1, 2016, the minimum wage for San Francisco employees will increase to $13.00 per hour with scheduled annual increases each year.
